AR Gridiron Football Challenge is an augmented reality mobile football game. The game is in scrimmage or jamboree format. The 'Player' runs 10 plays with a goal of getting as many touchdowns and/or first downs possible. Offensive teams are awarded points for pass receptions, first downs, and touchdowns. Defensive teams are given points for incomplete passes, third and fourth down stops, and shutouts.
To begin a challenge: Hold your phone or tablet in a horizontal position above any 'flat area' (floor, table, countertop, etc.) where you want to play AR Gridiron. Click the 'Kick Off' button and the game will appear beneath your phone. Move with your phone around the field to where you want to view the action. You have 10 (ten) plays to score as many first downs and/or touchdowns. Points are awarded on offense for first downs and touchdowns. Defense receives points for 3rd and 4th down stops. Defense can earn bonus points for shutouts. The ball starts on the plus 40 yard line.
Before launching a challenge, you can edit/adjust the 'Power- Up' ranking of your team by position. Values are assigned between 1 and 5, with a unit total not to exceed 12. The offensive assigned values determine a player's speed, ability to avoid tackles, and catch percentage. Defensive values determine speed, ability to tackle, and defend against the pass. An algorithm is run using these values for each player before and during the play. For example: The probability of a targeted receiver making a catch is dependent on the player ranking, defender(s) ranking, and QB ranking.
Growing up, I was intrigued with my electric football game. The game gave me the ability to design plays, create formations, and 'direct' the movement of the players. While watching and participating in football, I envisioned a more interactive tabletop game with enhanced control over the players, having the ability to view and control each player and play the game from multiple perspectives. I wanted 'smarter' players that ran designed plays and reacted in a more realistic manner. No current video/mobile games provided that immersive tabletop feel.
In 2017, I was introduced to Microsoft's Hololens via a promotional image of the device's capabilities. I purchased this amazing AR/Mixed Reality headset and began developing applications to experience this new technology. When I created a football player (hologram) running from my bedroom, across the hall into my office...I WAS HOOKED! This technology could fulfill my dream of an interactive football game that was not confined to the borders of a device. Unfortunately, the cost of the Hololens was prohibitive and the user base too small for development of a commercial application. Another option, was to develop and release on a mobile phone platform that supported AR. Phone based AR has seen amazing growth since 2017, with over 3 billion devices that support AR and 1.06 billion Active Mobile AR consumers.
